Analysis of the Causes of Damage to LED Wall Washers

When it rains or snows and the lights are turned off for rest, the internal temperature of the LED wall washers will drop sharply, causing instantaneous pressure to form, resulting in a greater vacuum inside the lampshell. At this time, air or moisture can seep into the light fixture through the sealed gaps and condense into droplets. Once water droplets form inside the sealed light fixture, they are not easy to expel. Water droplets that remain inside the fixture for an extended period can corrode the internal electronic components, significantly affecting the lifespan of the LED wall washer.

If we disregard driver and power supply failures, one of the indications of the long service life of high-power LED wall washers is "light decay," which means that the longer the light is in use, the lower the brightness becomes until the end of its service life.

Commonly used white LED beads are produced by illuminating yellow phosphor with blue light. The main reasons for the decrease in light are:

  1. The optical attenuation of the blue light itself.
  2. The attenuation of the phosphor under high temperatures. Each brand's product has a different temperature affecting light attenuation.

From multiple temperature tests, we understand that the key to extending the lifespan of high-power wall washers is to reduce the junction temperature. How can we reduce the junction temperature? The key is to have a good heat sink. The heat generated by the LED wall washer can be dissipated in a timely manner.

Under what circumstances are LED wall washers prone to damage?

  1. LED wall washers of poor quality tend to malfunction, so it is important to purchase from brands with quality assurance.
  2. LED wall washers that are not used correctly as per the product manual are prone to failure and pose hidden dangers.
  3. Using too much current, exceeding the rated current of the LED wall washer, can cause components in the LED drive power supply to burn out.
  4. Issues with "condensation" in pointed-tip candle lights, bulb lights, and spotlight-style LED wall washers—in which water droplets and condensation appear on the inner wall of the cover after being lit for a while.

Wall washers generate a certain amount of heat during operation, and different materials have different coefficients of thermal expansion. After long-term use, gaps may appear at the junctions of different materials due to air ingress; when used in high humidity environments, different temperatures inside and outside the lamp cover can cause the heated gases inside to cool. If the gas at this time contains a lot of water vapor, condensation and droplets will appear, but these will disappear after the light has been on for a while. Therefore, humid environments are also a factor that affects the lifespan of LED wall washers.
